Dear Friend of the Sacred Heart,
Last November, Pope Benedict XVI blessed us with an encyclical on the virtue of hope. Then last month, in a homily in Washington, he said that his visit to the United States was meant to be a witness to "Christ our Hope."
The Pope reminded us that "Americans have always been a people of hope" and that "hope, hope for the future, is very much a part of the American character." He went on to say that
the Christian virtue of hope – the hope poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, the hope which supernaturally purifies and corrects our aspirations by focusing them on the Lord and his saving plan – that hope has also marked, and continues to mark, the life of the Catholic community in this country.
This hope must not be sterile. It is a virtue given us in Baptism by the Holy Spirit, a virtue which can and must change our lives.
Those who have hope must live different lives! By your prayers, by the witness of your faith, by the fruitfulness of your charity, may you point the way towards that vast horizon of hope which God is even now opening up to His Church, and indeed to all humanity: the vision of a world reconciled and renewed in Christ Jesus, our Savior. To Him be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen!
What a challenge this is for each one of us! Let us pray for one another that we might become ever more aware of God's gifts of Faith, Hope, and Love. Let us open our hearts to the Holy Spirit so that we may be strengthened to live our faith more fully and come to know His peace and joy.
On behalf of the Priests of the Sacred Heart, I want to thank you for your friendship. It is only through your generous support that we are able to preach the message of Christ's love and to give true hope to the poor and the needy. Be assured that you and your intentions will be remembered in our daily Masses and prayers.
May the Sacred Heart of Jesus keep you and your loved ones safe from all harm. May He bless you with peace and joy, today and always!
Gratefully in Christ,
